IPMS UK Scale Modelworld 2005

25.11.05

As usual this year's event was held at the International Centre, Telford. This year though
the event expanded, with part of Hall 3 being set aside to the competition and a
number of club and SIG stands. This is also where Milton Keynes Scale Models Club
(www.mksmc.co.uk) had their stand from which they did a number of modelling
demonstrations throughout the weekend.

We will bring you a full list of the competition winners, as soon as possible, but for now here
are a selection of images of models on the club stands and in the competition area that
caught our eye.

MAI contributor Andy Ieronymides' lovely little 1:48 Lysander on the Barnet stand

Even stunning models like this 1:48 Meteor T.7 were for sale!

Built by Czech modeller J. Hosek, this 1:48 Avia CS-92 is a conversion of the Monogram
Me 262!

Also on the Czech stand was this Avia S.92, probably built from the Tamiya 1:48 kit

A stunning Avia S-99, done in 1:32 from the Hasegawa Bf 109G kit plus, we suspect, Tally
Ho! decals?

We have not seen many of the Trumpeter Mil Mi-4s in 1:35 built, so it was good to see this
one on the Czech stand

Can't recall which club stand this was one, but it was a very effective little diorama

Marking the end of No.800 NAS, this display of Sea Harriers was seen on the Harrier SIG
stand

Partially completed, this AeroTech 1:32 Macchi-Castoldi MC.72 is being built for MAI, so
keep an eye on our website for details of which edition it will appear in!

Built by Roger Brown of the Harrow club, this PR Lightning F-5 looks stunning in Haze Blue

I think we have featured this before in a show report, but this Airfix Hawk 100 with Neomega
cockpit update really looked nice

Neville Dukes' modified Hunter F Mk 3 which captured the Air Speed Record was seen on
the one of the SIG stands

This 1:48 Hunter T Mk 7 two-seater really caught the eye with its very striking day-glo
paintwork

Seen on the IPMS Avon stand was this Canberra, being 1:32 it had to be scratchbuilt or
based on the ID vac-form!

This nicely mottled 1:48 Ju 88G-6 was, I think, on the Warrington stand

Also on the Warrington stand was this 1:32 RF-4 Phantom

I did not note the stand this 1:48 Lynx diorama was one, but it was very effective. When oh
when will we get a nice new injected 1:48 or 1:32 Lynx kit?

Beautifully detailed and painted, this 1:48 MiG-15bis really caught my eye - lovely!

Built by Dave Scott of the Milton Keynes Scale Model Club, this 1:48 Barracuda is actually
made from the Sierra Scale vac-form

George Coote of the MK club brought along a good selection of his lovely kits, of which
his George and Lancaster, both to 1:48, are seen here, The canopy framing on the Lanc had
to be seen to be beleived; it was all done with decals apparently.

One very festive model on the MK stand was this snow-covered Spitfire, neat!

Ah, you can always interest me with a Mosquito. This FB Mk VI was very nice, especially
when you realise it is 1:32 and built from the Revell kit with the Paragon conversion

Seen on the Avro Lancs stand was this 1:48 PBY. It was nicely made but the thing that really
stood out about it was the canopies, they were just so clear

The Research & Development SIG had some very unusual 'solid' models on display...

...I want one, a jet-powered Mosquito...

...and a jet-powered Whirlwind. Oh just think about the CofG!

Some modellers can get a bit fixated on a subject, in this case the Spitfire!

This nicely built Demon was seen on the USN SIG and is probably made from the Grand
Phoenix kit with the various Aires updates

Competition
Here is our selection of images from the competition area. They do not reflect those that won,
although a number of these are included, it is just those that took our eye.

Very silly 1:48 Do 217 in the What If? category

A very impressive A-6, especially when you realise it is 1:72!

Taking Gold in its class was this Avro Manchester built with the Paragon conversion

This lovely little Antarctic Auster was built from the old Airfix 1:72 kit!

Nicely weathered and finished this Bf 109B was probably based on the Heller kit in 1:72

Taking the win it its class was this 1:72 Bv 222 built by Angela Adams

This Fokker FVIIa in 1:72 had to be built from the old Frog kit?

Built by MAI contributor John McIllmurray, this MPM 1:72 Wellington Mk Ic was
superdetailed and took Silver in its class - beautiful!

The Ju 388 is a sexy looking machine and this 1:72 version was probably built from the
Special Hobby kit.

Taking Silver in the helicopter class was this Merlin made by MAI contributor John 'Tigger'
Wilkes. See Issue 1 for more on this little beauty

Taking the win in its class was this 1:72 Lancaster in 'Mickey the Moocher' markings

A lovely Finnish MiG-21F-13, probably built from the Revell 1:72 kit

Nicely detailed Sea Fury FB Mk 11, probably based on the Special Hobby 1:72 kit

This Vampire F Mk 4 won its class and probably had a few people amazed at the detail the
builder got into it. He based it on the lovely Rareplanes vac-form, which must have made
getting interior detail in a lot easier!

There were quite a number of nicely built and finished USN types in the 1:72 categories

Taking Bronze in its category was this 1:48 Ar 234B-2 with a number of panels off. The
number of kits that were superdetailed this year was far lower than before, the trend
seemed to have changed to painting and finishing this year?

This 1:48 Cessna A-37 was just beautiful, so colourful and such fine finishing

This desert-camouflaged A-series Ju 88 was one of the few models in the competition with
'all the panels off'

And right alongside it was another Ju 88A-series, again with all the panels off, but this time
in European theatre markings

Probably the one model that took the most attention was this 1:48 P-40 Tomahawk with just
about every panel off. This had to be the work of one of the master modellers from the Czech
Republic!

This heavily weathered F4U Corsair in 1:48 looked very good

Commended was this 1:48 Sea Gladaitor, built we suspect from the Roden kit

Taking Gold in the Helicopter class was this 1:48 Sea King, built we suspect from the
Hasegawa kit

Winning its class was this Airfix 1:48 Hawk T Mk 1

Scratchbuilt to 1:18th scale was this H.P. Heyford, created by Alan Clarke

Also scratchbuilt we suspect, as it was 1:32, was this Hudson

Close-up of the cockpit of a 1:32 MiG-21UM see in the competition

Hurricane in Rumanian markings, very nice, especially as it is based on the 1:32 Revell kit!

Strangley this 1:32 Su-27 Flanker did not seem to have been placed

Taking Gold in its class, John Wilkes' 1:32 F/A-18D will be familiar to MAI readers, as it
appears in Issue 5

Just to prove how silly you can get, this is Phil Ware's stunning F-86 Sabre, in 1:144!

Taking Senior Best in Show and 2005 Champion was this stunning 1:48 scratchbuilt Supermarine Stranraer
